Objective. Our objective was to assess the short-term complication rate in patients undergoing treatment of thoracolumbar fixed sagittal plane deformity (FSPD).

Summary of Background Data. The reported morbidity and mortality for the surgical treatment of thoracolumbar FSPD is varied and based on studies with small sample sizes. Further studies are needed to better assess FSPD complication rate, and the factors that influence it.

Methods. The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) Morbidity and Mortality Database was queried to identify cases of thoracolumbar FSPD from 2004 to 2007. Complications were analyzed based on correction technique, surgical approach, surgeon experience (SRS membership status used as a surrogate), patient age, and history of prior surgery.

Results. Five hundred and seventy-eight cases of FSPD were identified.

At two sites malaria admissions rates increased by 55% and 35%. Results from the ITS models indicate that before scaled intervention in September 2006, there was a significant month-to-month decline in the mean malaria admission rates at four hospitals (trend P < 0.05). At the point of scaled intervention, the estimated mean admission rates for malaria was significantly less at four sites compared to the pre-scaled period baseline. Following scaled intervention there was a significant change in the month-to-month trend in the mean malaria admission rates in some but not all of the sites. “Objective: To compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of HIV-1-HTLV-1 coinfected patients, in Bahia, Brazil. Methods: Retrospective, comparative study. Results: Among a total of 123 consecutive HIV infected patients, 20 men (20.6%) and 6 women (23.1%) had detectable antibodies against HTLV-I/II. The major risk factor associated with coinfection by HTLV was intravenous drug use (57.7% Z-IETD-FMK mw of coinfected patient versus 9.2% of HTLV seronegative patients, p < 0.0001). Coinfected Wnt tumor patients had higher absolute lymphocyte counts (1,921 + 762 versus 1,587 + 951, p = 0.03). Both groups of patients had similar means of CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts. However, among patients with AIDS CD4+ cell counts were significantly higher among those coinfected with HTLV-I/II (292 +/- 92 cells/mm(3), versus 140 +/- 177 cells/mm(3), p = 0.36). The frequency and type of opportunistic infections were similar for both groups, but strongyloidiasis and encephalopathy were more frequently

Few clinical studies have compared deep absorbable sutures. Poliglecaprone-25 and polyglactin-910 are two of the most commonly used absorbable

sutures in cutaneous surgery.

Objectives

To compare the rate of suture extrusion, degree of lumpiness, and appearance of scars from wounds closed with poliglecaprone-25 and polyglactin-910.

Methods

Poliglecaprone-25 Selleck 4SC-202 or polyglactin-910 was used for closure of the deep part of Mohs defects. The number of extruded sutures and the number of lumps were recorded at each follow-up visit. Photographs of 1-week and 3-month postoperative scars were rated on a visual analogue scale.

Results

One hundred forty patients completed the study. There was a statistically significant difference in the percentage of extruded sutures between poliglecaprone-25 (3.1%) and polyglactin-910 (11.4%) (p<.01).
