Methods: Skin biopsies were taken in 17 patients in N and in PSO and/or PP. The mRNA steady-state level of angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis markers was

measured by RT-PCR. Immunohistochemistry was performed for von Willebrand factor, podoplanin, Ki-67 and VEGFR3. Blood (BV) and lymphatic (LV) vessels expansion was measured by computer-assisted morphometry.

Most former studies on NI in hospitalized children analyzed specific units or pathogens and neglected the postdischarge period. We aimed to prospectively assess viral NI occurring

during and shortly after hospitalization in children.

Fifty-two (0.8%) patients acquired 54 viral NI during hospitalization and 12 patients (1.1%) acquired 12 viral NI after hospital discharge (NI incidence: 1.9 per 1000 PHD including follow-up period). NI rate in infants was higher compared with children >12 months old (2.0% vs. 0.8%; P < 0.05) and the infant ward also had the highest incidence (4.0 NI per 1000 PHD). Most NI were gastrointestinal tract infections with 55% caused by rotavirus infection. NI rates were highest between November and March.

Conclusions: A significant part of NI will only be detected if surveillance includes the immediate postdischarge period. Given the strong seasonality of pediatric NI, intensifying hygiene measurements particularly on infant wards and prior to the cold season would be beneficial in reducing NI incidence.

Methods: We evaluated the effectiveness of long-term anti-CD25 AL3818 cell line monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based immunosuppression in 17 adult heart transplant recipients with CKD at 10 +/- 5 years post-transplant. Seven patients had previously been switched to rapamycin but had untreatable side-effects and 10 patients were still on a CNI. The latter were matched with 10 control heart transplant patients whose renal function had remained stable over a similar post-transplant follow-up period, on CNI.

Results: Anti-CD25 MAb were given over 13 +/- 10 months and were well tolerated with CD25 saturation monitoring (target <2% expression). Side-effects secondary to rapamycin resolved in 6 patients. The slope change of the creatinine clearance improved in patients in whom CNIs were discontinued (+0.335 ml/min/month vs -0.124 ml/min/month in controls, p = 0.03). Four patients died. Three died after 2, 6 and 7 months of follow-up, respectively, with the following diagnoses: acute renal failure (the patient refused dialysis); acute rejection (the patient had refused protocol endomyocardial biopsy); and perforated diverticulitis. “Consistent individual differences in behaviour, aka personality, pose several evolutionary questions. For example, it is difficult to explain within-individual consistency in behaviour because behavioural plasticity is often advantageous. In addition, selection erodes heritable behavioural variation that is related to fitness, therefore we wish to know the mechanisms that can maintain between-individual variation in behaviour. In this paper, we argue that whole genome expression data can reveal new insights into the proximate mechanisms underlying personality, as well as its evolutionary consequences.
