Health and the aging process are closely associated with physical fitness, and DNA methylation (DNAm) data can track aging using epigenetic clocks. Epigenetic clocks currently in use have not included metrics for mobility, strength, lung health, or endurance in their construction process. We create blood-based DNA methylation markers reflecting fitness parameters such as gait speed, maximum handgrip strength, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max), which show a moderate correlation with these fitness parameters in five independent validation datasets (average correlation coefficient between 0.16 and 0.48). DNAmFitAge, a novel biological age indicator encompassing physical fitness, was subsequently generated by combining these DNAm fitness parameter biomarkers with DNAmGrimAge, a DNAm mortality risk assessment. DNAmFitAge shows a statistically significant link to moderate levels of physical activity, as confirmed across various validation sets (p = 6.4E-13). Younger, fitter DNAmFitAge values show a stronger relationship with improved DNAm fitness in both genders. In contrast to controls, male bodybuilders display a statistically significant decrease in DNAmFitAge (p = 0.0046) and an increase in DNAmVO2max (p = 0.0023). A group of study participants consisted of 252 diabetic patients, nonrandomly recruited from two clinics in Hartford, Connecticut, and given a produce prescription, alongside 534 similar control subjects. March 2020, marking the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, was also the month when the program began implementation. Six months' worth of produce vouchers, worth $60 per month, were provided to prescription program enrollees for the purchase of fresh produce from grocery retailers. Research at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) began with an unassuming start thanks to G.W. Carver's pioneering efforts at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, the nation's first HBCU. This individual's achievements are now remembered as the transformation of one crop, peanuts, into over three hundred diverse applications, encompassing sustenance, drinks, medicinal products, cosmetic items, and industrial chemicals. In contrast to a focus on research, the newly founded HBCUs prioritized liberal arts education and agricultural training for the black community. HBCUs, while established, persisted in a state of segregation, with inadequate libraries and scientific/research apparatus when compared with the resources available at traditionally white institutions. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, while propelling the cause of equal opportunity and progressive desegregation in the South, unfortunately led to a painful reality for many public HBCUs; they were obliged to close or merge with white institutions due to diminished financial support and student numbers.
